What We Believe

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer

We Believe

The following are the core beliefs of Calvary Chapel Puerto Rico based on the foundational truths taught in the Bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

Worship of God should be spiritual!

Worship of God should be inspirational!

Worship of God should be intelligent!

Worship of God is fruitful!

Therefore we remain flexible so the Holy Spirit may direct our worship.
Therefore we give a great place to music in our worship.
Therefore, in our services, we emphasize Bible teaching so God may instruct us how He would be worshiped.
Therefore we look for His love in our lives as the greatest evidence that we are truly worshiping Him.

Statement of Faith

God, The Father
We believe the Father is the first Person of the Trinity. He is perfect in holiness, wisdom, justice, power, and love, yet infinitely personal. The Father desires that all people would be saved, and experience His perfect love. (1 Timothy 2:4, Matthew 28:19-20, John 5, John 14:28)
God, The Son
We believe that Jesus Christ, is the only begotten Son of God. Though fully God, Jesus became a man in order to pay the price for the sins of mankind. He is the promised Messiah, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, He provided Himself as the propitiation on the Cross, in our place. His propitiation paid for, forgave, and forgave the sin of the entire world. (2 Corinthians 5:19, 1 John 2:2, John 3:16, John 1:29, John 19:30). The only sin that now separates man from God is their rejection of Jesus Christ, as Lord and Savior. (1 John 5:11-12, John 3:36, John 5:19-27). Jesus was bodily resurrected by the power of the Holy Spirit, ascended back to Heaven, is seated the right hand of the Father,  ever lives to make intercession for us as our High Priest, and will soon return to earth to judge the living and the dead, and to establish the reign of His eternal Kingdom. (John 1:1, 14, Matthew 1:18-25, 2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 Peter 3:18, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Hebrews 10:12-13)
God, The Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit is fully God, and is the Third Person of the Trinity. He is worthy of worship and equal in power, glory, and divinity to the Father, and to the Son.  It is the Holy Spirit who indwells and seals every believer, baptizing them into the Body of Christ. This is the only baptism that saves. We further believe that the Holy Spirit will come upon any believer who asks in faith, enabling him/her to preach the Gospel in power, and live a life empowered by the Spirit, free from the dominion of sin. God the Holy Spirit continues to lead His church today, and pours out gifts on believers, as He wills. (John 14:16-17, John 16:7-11, Titus 3:5-6, Romans 8:9, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Ephesians 1:13-14, Acts 1:8, Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12-14, 1 Peter 4:10-11)
Trinity
We believe there is only One personal, transcendent, and holy GOD, the Creator of all. The LORD is eternal, infinite, and exist in three separate and distinct Persons: God the Father,  God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. Each of the three Persons of the Godhead are distinct from each other in their personhood, but are one in essence and nature. All three persons of the Godhead are worthy of our worship, praise, and exaltation. The Trinity shows us the beauty, diversity, and unity of the One true and living God - The LORD. (Deuteronomy 6:4, Isaiah 45:21-22, Matthew 28:19, Colossians 1:16)
Bible
We believe in the inerrancy of Scripture, that the Bible, Old and New Testaments, in the original autographs, is the inspired, infallible Word of God, a complete and final written revelation of God to humanity. Therefore, the clear teaching of the Word of God is the final authority for Christian living. (2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:21, John 10:35)
Spiritual Gifts
We believe all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Scriptures are valid for today, if they are exercised within the scriptural guidelines. We believe that love is more important than all the gifts, and without this love all exercise of spiritual gifts is worthless. (1 Corinthians 12, 13 & 14, Romans 12:3-8, Ephesians 4:11-12, 1 Peter 4:10-11)
Sin
We believe that all humans are by nature separated from God, dead in sin, and responsible for their own failures. We also believe that redemption, and the forgiveness of all sins (except rejecting Christ) has already been accomplished by Christ on the Cross. However, salvation and eternal life are freely offered to every human, who will repent of their unbelief in Jesus Christ, and receive Him into their hearts, as Lord & Savior. This salvation is only possible by the grace of God, and is received by faith alone in the person and work of Jesus Christ on our behalf. (Romans 3:23, 2 Corinthians 5:19, 1 John 2:2, Romans 6:23)
Salvation
We believe that salvation is a distinct work from forgiveness. Salvation/Eternal life is offered by the grace of God, and comes through the finished work of Jesus' Cross and Resurrection. A person is saved/born again when they by faith believe in Jesus' sacrificial death upon the Cross for their personal sins, and when they ask Christ to enter and live in their hearts by His Spirit. As Christ comes and dwells in them, they are now born again, are spiritually alive to God, are indwelt by the Spirit of the God Himself, and now have a personal relationship with God. From this point on the Lord lives in them, has filled them, and has joined Himself to their spirit. They are now brand new creations in Christ, with a new nature/spirit that is holy and blameless, as they walk intimately with Christ for the rest of their lives. (John 3:16-19, Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5, 1 Corinthians 2:12, John 14:6, Romans 10:9-10, Philippians 3:10-11, Romans 6:23, Ephesians 1:13-14, John 17:3)
Forgiveness
We believe that all humans are by nature separated from God, dead in sin, and responsible for their own failures. Scripture teaches us that forgiveness of sin is not the same thing as salvation/eternal life. We believe that redemption/the forgiveness of all sins of the world (except rejecting Christ) was accomplished in totality by Christ on the Cross. However, salvation and eternal life are freely offered to every human, who will repent of their unbelief in Jesus Christ, and receive Him into their hearts, as Lord & Savior. This salvation/eternal life is only possible by the grace of God, and is received by faith alone in the person and work of Jesus Christ on our behalf. Forgiveness was achieved on the cross by Jesus; salvation/eternal life is received when a person accepts Jesus Christ into their heart, and they are born again into eternal life. (2 Corinthians 5:19, 1 John 2:2, John 3:16, John 1:29, John 19:30)
Marriage & Gender
We believe that God created human beings, male and female, in His own image. He created them sinless, equal in value, dignity, and worth. According to His purpose and design, men and women are created to fulfill distinct but complementary roles in the contexts of marriage, family, and the local church. (Genesis 1:26-28, Ephesians 5:22-6:4, 1 Timothy 3:1-7)
The Devil
We believe in a personal devil/fallen angel called Satan who, along with all his evil angels, called demons, is destined to spend eternity in the Lake of Fire. The Devil now seeks to deceive believers and defeat the work of God, but he can be resisted by believers who are in-dwelt by the Holy Spirit, protected by God, and interceded for by Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 John 3:8, 2 Corinthians 11:3, Romans 16:20, 1 Peter 5:8-9, Matthew 4:1-11, Revelation 20:1-6)
Israel
We believe that the nation of Israel has a special place in God's plan and that all the covenant promises of God to Israel in the Old Testament, must be/will be fulfilled. We believe that Israel is a chosen people unto the Lord, that one day soon, all of national Israel will be saved. Soon, Israel's hearts will be turned towards Christ, they will receive Him as Messiah, as He establishes His global eternal Kingdom. (Romans 11)
Rapture of the Church
We believe the church will be delivered from the “hour of trial” which will come upon all who dwell on the earth, being “caught up” in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air (the Rapture). (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, 1 Corinthians 15:51-55, Revelation 3:10)
Second Coming of Christ
We believe the saints will return with Christ to the earth, at His Second Coming, to rule and reign with Him. (Jude 1:14, Revelation 19:11-16, Revelation 20:4)
The Kingdom of God/Heaven
We believe in the pre-millennial return of Christ, to sit upon the throne of David and rule over the house of Jacob (Israel), and the entire cosmos, forever. (Revelation 20:1-6, Luke 1:31-33, Isaiah 9:6-7) We believe in the resurrection of the dead. Some will be raised to life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt (hell). We believe that God will create a New Heaven and New Earth in which righteousness will dwell. We believe that the throne of God and the Lamb (Jesus Christ) will be established in the New Jerusalem forever. (Daniel 12:2, John 5:25-29, Revelation 21:1-22:5)
