"Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.” - 1 Sam 16:1
Imagine if you were tasked with the enormous task of choosing the next President of the United States of America. Honestly, what kinds of qualities would you be looking for?
If you're like most people, you'd be envisioning a person with charisma, great experience, impressive political knowledge, appealing physical stature, a sizable budget, and an aggressive type A personality. Isn't this the type of candidate that most people, even many Christians would likely choose for themselves?
However, God's list of desirable qualities is very different from ours: weakness, humility, dependence, honesty, faithfulness, compassion, and godliness.
These are some of the qualities that the Lord esteems and looks to find in the servants He calls to the Kingdom.
David was such a man. Even at the age of about 15, he possessed sufficient character and a heart after Christ, that in all of the pages of Scripture, only David is called "a man after God's heart."
Even as Paul the Apostle said, in Acts 13:22 while speaking of Israel's history:
"He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’ "
Though he was young at the time, despised even by his own father and brothers, and not at all impressive according to today's worldly method of selection and evaluation, yet he possessed the most vital ingredient of all: a heart that passionately pursued the Lord above all else!
Isn't this the inner attitude that Jesus commanded His disciples to have in Matthew's Gospel when He said:
"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." - Matt 6:33
Didn't Christ teach us in the Sermon on the Mount that the Lord always looks at the heart of a man, rather than anything external? (Read Matt 5-7)
Didn't the Lord rebuke the prophet Samuel when even he was impressed by the external size and appearance of Jesse's other seven sons?
"So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” - 1 Sam 16:6,7
Do you have a heart that loves and pursues the Lord? Do you chase after the heart of Christ, despite your sins and failures, and desire His will for your life above all else? If the answer is yes, then you have the most important ingredient He looks for!
That means that you can and will be used by the Lord, for His Kingdom work, if you just keep your heart passionately fixed upon Jesus and pursuing His will for your life!
Today, I encourage you to set your heart towards Christ like never before. Repent of anything and everything that may be hindering your walk with Him. Remove from your life any relationships or habits that are pulling your affections and devotion away from your King.
Today, recommit yourself once again to the study of His Word; to the service of His people; and to the expansion of His Kingdom....knowing that if you possess a heart that passionately pursues Christ and His Kingdom, that is exactly who the Lord is looking for to mightily use for His cause:
"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him." - 2 Chron 16:9
Today, be sure to set your heart right before the Lord, and keep it set there...knowing that this is the kind of person who God chooses - those with a heart to passionately pursue Him!
