The Most Important Thing

"And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” - Exodus 3:14

Have you ever wondered what the most powerful and destructive weapon is on earth?  In this modern age of breathtaking technology, there are a lot of top competitors: Atomic bombs; Electro Magnetic Pulse waves; Chemical weapons; computer viruses; biologically engineered diseases; etc.... But greater that all of this put together, is a weapon that can unleash more destructive force than anything else on earth: an idea.

A man's actions can be deadly, but behind all of his actions are his ideas.  So if you control his ideas, then you control the man...or the army... or the nation... or even the world!  A popular movie stated that an idea is "like a virus" which can spread uncontrollably, create much damage, and be almost impossible to remove.  Ask yourself, what was it that created the Hitlers, Stalins, and Ayatollahs of this past century? Simply put - ideas.

Perhaps this is why the great Christian author and teacher, A.W. Tozer, was fond of repeating this axiom:

"What comes into your mind, when you think about God, is the most important thing about you!"

I wholeheartedly agree with Tozer. The defining quality, at the core of every human being, is the set of ideas that makes them who they are.  None of these ideas are more important or impacting than what a person thinks about GOD.

The reason for this, is that depending on what concept of GOD a person holds to, it will influence nearly everything in their life.  A person's entertainment, our occupations, how we raise our children, our perspective on spiritual things, our view of death, and so many more are all influenced by how we see GOD...or don't see Him.

So the million dollar question is this: "What do  think that God is like? How do YOU see Him in your mind's eye? What do YOU imagine or believe God to be?"

Thankfully, we are not left to ourselves to imagine what we think (or would like) God to be like.  Though this is precisely what the rest of the world's religions and philosophies have done, in Biblical Christianity we have something very special and unique: Divine Revelation.

The only way that finite beings (like humans) could ever hope to understand an infinite Being (God) is if He chose to reveal Himself to us in some way.  In the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, this is exactly what we have. The Scriptures are GOD revealing Himself to mankind directly..amazing!! (Read 1 Tim 3:16; 1 Pet 1:19-21)

In the Word of God, these are 7 of the qualities that the Lord has revealed to us about Himself:

1. GOD is - Self-Existent "And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
- Exodus 3:14

This means that rather than having existence (like you or I), the Lord is existence.  His unending life flows from within His own being. As self-existent it is impossible for God to not exist.  As the Creator, He gives existence to everything else, sustains everything continually...and is Himself pure existence - the Great "I AM".

2. GOD is Eternal
"Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary." - Isaiah 40:28 NKJV

To be "everlasting" or "eternal" means to be without beginning or end.  Think of it... the Lord has always existed, and He will always exist. He is our eternal and everlasting King, who has always known you, and always loved you!

3GOD is - Unchanging
Malachi 3:6 - “For I am the Lord, I do not change.."

Since the Lord is an infinite, eternal GOD, He is also unchanging.  His goodness will never waiver; His holiness never falters; His love for you will never fail; GOD is immutable and unchanging!  Thought this world is shaky and fickle, the Lord never changes!

4. GOD is Perfect - Love
1 John 4:8 - "..God is Love."

God doesn't just have love, God is love.  Love, goodness, and kindness are the very core of God's being.  He always acts loving, and always thinks loving thoughts about you... because that Who God is - Perfect Love!

5. God is - PERFECTLY HOLY - Isaiah 6:3 - "And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”

To be holy means to be "different" or to be "set apart"; it also means to be "perfectly pure morally".  All of these, and even more, are understood by God saying that He is holy.  He is absolutely free from any moral darkness (Read 1 John 1:5), but also that He is in His own category alone - only He is perfect, infinite, and eternal!

6. GOD is - ALL POWERFUL  -
Mark 10:27 - "Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”

The true definition of God being All-Powerful (omnipotent) means that God can do anything and everything that is actually real, and not against his own character.  For example, God cannot do evil, but that doesn't mean He isn't All-Powerful. It means that it's impossible for Him to act in any other way than good.  Also, God cannot "create a rock that too big for Him to carry" or "make another God just like Him"...why not? Because these things are illogical and non-sensical!!

However, anything that is actually real and possible, (like parting the Red Sea, creating the universe, or rising from the dead) God can do it...very easily!!

7. GOD is - All-Knowing  - "..behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it."  - Psalm 139:4-6

This means that the Lord knows all truths, and doesn't believe anything false.  The Lord possesses all knowledge of everything, everyone, everywhere... all at once! He doesn't have to access it like a computer, but rather knows ALL truth instantly and completely!

ASK YOURSELF: "Is this the God that I have been worshipping?  Is this the Creator that I think of when I close my eyes and worship?"

If not, then ask the Lord to shatter your small concept of Him, and refashion it according to the truth of His Word.  Make sure that you are not conceiving of a false, limited, puny "god"... but rather the LORD and Maker of heaven and earth, Who deserves all glory, honor, and praise for His greatness and majesty!

It's really true: "What comes into your mind, when you think about GOD, is the most important thing about you!"
