"Truly God is good.."
- Psalm 73:1
Spiritual slogans can be very dangerous. Just like the secular TV commercials that encourage us to "Have it your way!" or to "Satisfy your thirst!", many times even Christians can make the error of trying to summarize their beliefs into short, cute little sayings. However, even though this is often the case, there are certain phrases that many Christians use and are familiar with, that are actually true and happen to be very powerful and extremely practical.
"God is good..all the time!" is one such slogan, and it should really be the mantra of every Christian believer. James, the half-brother Jesus, put it like this in his letter:
"Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning." - James 1:16,17
Just as the psalmist told us, James also reminds us that "God is good" and perfect all the time! This is a very simple, yet extremely profound statement about our Creator. Let's take some time and meditate on the significance and application of this biblical truth.
To say that "God is good all the time" means that He is nothing but holy and perfect in everything that He does (Isaiah 6:1-3). Though we may not see it or understand it, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, that the Lord does in your life is good and holy. It's impossible for God to sin, impossible for Him to do evil (James 1:13-17)
Everything that God does or allows in your life is for your good, and for His glory (Romans 8:28). The Lord loves you perfectly and without limitation, and so every way that He intersects your life perfect and good, as well (Jer 29:11-13).
The important question to ask yourself is this: "Do I really believe that...for MY life?!?". Have you perhaps lost sight of God's goodness in your present situation?
Let me illustrate it: Though the Sun is 1.3 million times the size of planet earth, you can easily block your sight of it by holding up a penny to your eye. Have you allowed this to happen in your life with God? Has some small, cheap thing been allowed to eclipse God's goodness in your heart, and make you blind to His perfect love for you?
If so, then right now, right where you are, ask the Lord to show you what is blocking your vision of His goodness. Ask Jesus to help you identify that obstacle and through His Spirit, to remove it from your heart and mind today! Recapture your vision for God's goodness, His perfection in your life, and his infinite love for you personally. Then you'll be able to once again say and believe the powerful statement: "God is good..all the time!"
